A new initiative is launching, offering support to those who may be lonely this festive season, with Christmas lunch being provided for those affected.
Barras Retail Centre is working together with Valderie Construction and The Round Table to launch its Christmas Lunch service.
The initiative aims to provide ready-made Christmas meals, which will just require reheating, complete with all the trimmings and dessert, to individuals who qualify.
The meals will be delivered on Christmas Eve, ready for the big day itself.
Thomas Hearne, Director of Valderie Construction said he and the others involved all felt compelled to do something this year.
“We, along with a team of volunteers and tradesmen that use our Deli, will prepare and deliver meals on Christmas eve that the recipients will only need to place in their oven which they can then enjoy. This we hope will add something to their day that will be memorable.
“The main target are people who are alone at Christmas, suffering mental health issues, or elderly that do not have the capacity/ facilities to make their own lunch.
“We have had a brilliant response so far, with volunteers willing to donate their time to prepare meals, drivers to deliver on Christmas Eve, and suppliers who are willing to donate products for free.
“We’re aiming that people reading will be able to either email, call, or drop in at the Barras retail centre to put their name down. The highlight is to stress this is for people in need, and not people who are wanting a free meal. This is why we have reached out to the Guernsey welfare to help spread the word.”
Barras Retail Centre opened in October, with its onsite Deli offering freshly cooked food, as well as its fuel forecourt and shop.
It currently sells items including cooked breakfasts and roast dinners.
