"No need" to keep students off school

Tuesday 10 March 2020

All Guernsey schools have sent out a message to parents, after it was confirmed the first person to be diagnosed with COVID-19 in the island is a parent of a Grammar School student.

The information, which was distributed to all schools in Guernsey by the States yesterday, is encouraging guardians not to keep their children off school for fear of coronavirus.

The teenager, whose parent recently contracted the virus following a trip to Tenerife, is currently in self isolation along with the rest of their family.

The teenager has no symptoms at the moment and did not go on holiday with their parent who has become Guernsey's first confirmed case of COVID-19.

"Public Health has advised the Grammar School that, because the students does not have symptoms, the risk to the wider school community is low," the message explains. "Public Health is working hard to continue this case and it is important that we remain calm and take proportionate steps to support the efforts of Public Health."
