A new webcam has been put up at Guernsey Airport, looking across the forecourt.
The installation is a collaboration between Traffic and Highway Services and the Guernsey Taxi Drivers Association, intended to, amongst other potential benefits, help cut down on waiting times for passengers.
The webcam will allow taxi drivers to see how many people are waiting for a ride at the rank.
It’s hoped it could reduce the need for taxi drivers to wait at the airport at times when there is very little or no demand, and allow drivers to respond more effectively to demand fluctuations.
The webcam is only available to taxi drivers who need to request a log-in to gain access, and cannot be viewed by members of the public. This aims to make sure the webcam complies with data protection, and that privacy is maintained.
Laura Oxburgh, the Head of On-Island Travel and Transport Implementation, said: “We’re pleased to have been able to work together with the taxi industry on this. Given the importance of privacy we had to ensure that this was done in the right way, but we believe that this will be worth the effort benefitting islanders, visitors and taxi drivers alike.”
Peter Blondel, the Chairman of the Guernsey Taxi Drivers Association, said: "With the recent installation of the webcam at the airport this is going to help the taxi drivers no end, whereby they will be able to see what the state of play is regarding the number of people waiting for taxis at the airport and then knowing whether it's going to be worth their while going back to the airport, as opposed to gambling that you'll get a fare or not.
"Along with the Guernsey Taxi App, which was launched last year, this is another good tool for the taxi industry."
