New Town poster campaign to help people's mental health

Wednesday 16 May 2018

Posters have been put up across St Peter Port ahead of a mental health awareness meeting this evening [Wednesday 16 May] which has been organised by a local woman now living in London.

The posters are mainly around the Market Place, where the talk will be taking place with representatives from Guernsey MIND and other areas of the island's mental health sector.

"Well I started this because I wanted to help people stay positive - the signs are meant to be uplifting and remind people about the positives of life," Sian Jones, the organiser of the meeting and the signs said.

She said she once was at a point where she tried to take her own life, 10 years ago, and she also added her father passed away one year ago, the day after her marriage. This would mark both of those events.

"My wife and I live in Westminster, and we saw some signs like these when we were walking our dog around there. Those signs that we saw were really uplifting and made me feel good, so I want to replicate that over here.

"We have put the signs up around Town with general feel-good messages and reminders on them, I just wanted to remind people that when you are at a low point, there is always improvement around the corner.

Along with the signs, Mrs Jones has also had the posters printed which will be available to purchase at the meeting tonight, with 10% of the revenue going to Guernsey Mind.

The talks start at 17:00 in the Market Building, and will run until 19:00 - anyone is welcome to attend. Mrs Jones will also be there tomorrow (Thursday 17 May) available to speak to anyone who wishes to discuss the matter.

Emily Listen from Guernsey Mind will attend and Mrs Jones herself will do a talk.
