New symptoms declared

Saturday 11 April 2020

With corona virus now affecting more than 200 people in the Bailiwick, an updated list of symptoms has been released so everyone can be sure they are looking out for the right things as concerns grow about the more vulnerable members of our communities.

By teatime yesterday, Public Health had confirmed 200 people have tested positive for the virus. Of those 200, six people have sadly died, while another three people not confirmed to have covid-19 are presumed to have had it and have also sadly died.

Of the two hundred people confirmed to have the virus so far, 42 have now recovered - while another 21 people are waiting for their test results back. Nearly 1300 people have tested negative out of the 1578 tested by yesterday afternoon.

Public Health Guernsey are studying the data they have been able to glean from interviews with each positive case, and also data shared by other countries through the World Health Organisation.

Now, they've released a new list of symptoms for everyone to consider including a loss of sense of smell or taste.

The Director of Public Health, Dr Nicola Brink, said anyone experiencing muscle ache (fatigue, exhaustion), a headache (sinus pain, pain around eyes), a loss of smell/taste, a sore throat, a fever (high temperature, rigors, chills, can’t get warm.), shortness of breath, chest tightness, a continuous new cough should contact your own GP or the corona virus hotline.

These additional symptoms have been added as a result of continued assessment of diagnostic information available on Covid-19 from cases studied locally and from research further afield.

Dr Brink said the Joint Emergency Services Control Centre, which is manning the corona virus hotline, and all Primary and Secondary Care providers are aware of these changes and are working to the updated criteria when assessing cases.

“It is very important we share this latest information with our communities so that we catch as many potential cases of covid-19 at the earliest opportunity," said Dr Brink.

"This will help us to identify community seeding of the virus, find and quarantine cases and provide them with the appropriate care and support. We can then contact trace to reduce onward transmission of the virus. If you, or household member are showing signs of any, or a combination of these symptoms, please contact the Coronavirus Helpline or your GP to seek further advice. “

The corona virus helpline numbers are 756938 and 756969.
