New safety measures planned

Tuesday 28 May 2024

The one way system around St Sampson's High School could be extended with Les Sauvagees made one way with a contraflow bike lane put in.

That work would coincide with safety improvement measures planned for the nearby junction where Les Sauvagees and the Saltpans meet Route Militaire.

Environment and Infrastructure suggests making it one way from the direction of Oatlands and Linfield Motors easterly towards Route Militaire.  The cycle contraflow lane would go in the opposite direction from Route Militaire towards Oatlands. Both these systems would connect with the existing one way system for motor vehicles and cycle contraflow lane that was established around St Sampson's High School when it opened in 2008.

An additional change could be the creation of a Ruette des Habitants on Duveaux Lane which would see traffic prohibited to those accessing properties only, while pedestrians and cyclists are allowed through in both directions.

E&I also said safety measures are being considered for the junction with the main road, where Les Sauvagees meets Route Militaire after recent accidents and incidents there, including one where an ambulance responding to an emergency call out was damaged.

These proposals are all part of the Better Transport Plan for the north of Guernsey which was published a week ago.

The planned changes include junction improvements, widening some roads, improved signage, new footpaths, cycle lanes, one way systems for cars, and changes to bus routes, schedules and the introduction of more bus shelters.

The Plan has been put together by the Committee for the Environment and Infrastructure to address existing problems, and concerns raised about future transport needs in the north of the island with up to 1,000 new homes planned to be built in St Sampsons and the Vale.

E&I says the Plan "sets out how improvements to transport infrastructure and better transport choices will be delivered over time, alongside new housing developments in the north of Guernsey".

Deputies Lindsay de Sausmarez and Adrian Gabriel told Express in an extended interview that the plan has come out of proactive preparation ahead of an expected increase of up to 1,000 new homes, across a number of new developments in close proximity to one another.

"Guernsey really needs a lot of new homes. And (people) are also probably aware that where those homes are likely to come forward first is in a quite a sort of small geographical area in the north of the island," said Deputy de Sausmarez.

"And we know that a lot of the existing current residents are concerned about the number of new homes and the traffic impact that that could have. And so we wanted to be proactive and actually put in place a package of measures to mitigate and hopefully minimise any negative impacts. And actually, we think that these measures will also provide some benefits to residents of the area as well."
