New Lieutenant Governor's Cadets appointed

Saturday 06 October 2018

Four senior members of local youth organisations have been presented with special medals to mark their appointment as a Lieutenant Governor's Cadet for the coming year.

They each represent a local youth group, and they received their medals from His Excellency Sir Ian Corder at a special ceremony held for them at Government House.

Their families and senior local officials were there to see them receive their honours.

The new cadets are, for the Elizabeth College Cadet Force, Jacob Goss; for the Scouting Association, Jonathan Charmley and Molly Simpson, and for the Sea Cadets, Luke Bourgaize.

His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor, Vice Admiral Sir Ian Corder, said: "Guernsey’s youth organisations have once again fielded some extremely good applicants, four of whom have been selected to serve as my Cadets for the coming year.

"I’ve thoroughly enjoyed meeting these young people. Together they bring a wide range of skills and interests to the role and I look forward to working with them over the coming year."

Each Cadet is presented with a medal that is struck locally by Bruce Russell & Son, and features a green ribbon and gold clasp. Recipients are also presented with a woven badge, which they are entitled to wear on their cadet uniforms.

The new cohort will also become members of The Youth Commission for Guernsey and Alderney’s Youth Forum. The Forum is a group of young people from across the Bailiwick that represents the views of their peers and issues important to young people in the island.

Kerstin Neason, CEO of The Youth Commission, said: "The Youth Forum’s primary focus is to engage with community leaders, senior civil servants, members of the education department and politicians to ensure that young peoples’ voices are heard by those making strategies and decisions, so it will be hugely beneficial for the Forum to have input from the new Cadets.

"The main role of the Cadets is to support the Lieutenant Governor at official and public functions so it is great that through their involvement in the Forum the Cadets, and as a result, His Excellency, Vice Admiral Sir Ian Corder, will be fully informed on the views of young people across the islands."
