New Island Archivist hopes to improve public access to archive

Thursday 25 August 2022

Vikki Hart (nee Ellis) has been appointed as Guernsey’s new Island Archivist and hopes to improve public access to the Island Archives.

Ms Hart was appointed by the Committee for Education, Sport and Culture earlier this year and started her new job on 1 July, after the previous Archivist, Dr Darryl Ogier retired.

Dr Ogier had been in the role for nearly three decades.

“I am very excited to be the next Island Archivist; the role is very interesting thanks to the variety of work and unique archive collections that we look after,” said Ms Hart.

“I feel privileged to work with such a committed and experienced team who bring a wealth of knowledge about the collections and how they can be used to research local history topics.

“In terms of priorities, we will be focussing on improving public access by developing an online catalogue so that members of the public can search our collections from home.”

The Head of Heritage Services, Helen Glencross, said: “Vikki brings 11 years of experience working with local archives and up-to-date knowledge of the most recent developments in archival practice.”
