New identity as 'In-dependence' wants to tackle all addictions

Thursday 30 May 2019

In-dependence - the new name for local charity Drug Concern, which has rebranded itself to reflect its push to treat addiction in all of its forms

The charity has been helping people tackle their drug or alcohol addictions, but also assisting other groups like the Guernsey Gambling Support Group.

In-dependence now aims to work with people with any addictions to help them gain independence from alcohol, drug and gambling in a non-judgemental environment.

First established in 1991 as a telephone helpline, it has steadily expanded the range of services it offers and continually seeks to improve its relationships with individuals needing help. The services range from raising awareness to individual work where the focus is on behaviour change such as counselling, harm reduction, peer support groups and family programmes free of charge.

“We felt it was time to better communicate what we stood for,” said In-dependence Business Manager, Tracey Rear.

“We want to keep the momentum and stay relevant in today’s society where addiction comes in so many forms. Our service is wide-ranging and the old name didn’t reflect the range of addictions we can work with.

“In-dependence is committed to islanders who are impacted by addiction to drugs, alcohol, or gambling, and we want to show solidarity with the people we support and not alienate anyone who needs our help.”

In-dependence can be contacted on 01481 729000 or can be visited on independence.gg for further information.
