New board-level leadership is required for the bodies which oversee and support the child welfare system, with several vacancies coming up in the year.
The Board is an independent body that supports the Office of the Children’s Convenor and the Child Youth and Community Tribunal, which are tasked with safeguarding and promoting the welfare of vulnerable children and young people.
It oversees and offers guidance to ensure the system works effectively, with members liaising politicians and civil servants.
A key consideration is ensuring these public services have the necessary resources to carry out duties in accordance with the relevant laws, such as the Children’s Law which was recently updated.
Eight members, one of which acts as Chair, are required, and serve for an initial three-year period. They are appointed by Health & Social Care.
Three vacancies will be created throughout 2024, including the position of Chair in September with incumbent Jane St Pier’s tenure coming to an end that month.
Candidates must have knowledge and experience relevant to the functions of the system.
Gill Couch, a member since 2015 and previous Chair, is appealing for new members: “We are looking for individuals who are passionate about improving the lives of children and young people who are eager to support the work of the Children’s Convenor and Child, Youth and Community Tribunal and who, ultimately, want to make a positive contribution to public service.
“While you do not need to have Board or Committee experience, it’s important that we find people with the right knowledge and experience relevant to the functions of the Children’s Convenor, those willing to learn and, most importantly, those who share our values and commitment to children and young people across the Bailiwick.”
Those interested should send a CV and covering letter to the Office of the Children’s Convenor at Briarwood, La Grande Rue, St Martins, GY4 6RX or apply via email to executiveofficer@gov.gg by 26 February.
More information can be obtained from the above email, or from MsCouch on 07839 266095.
