New accommodation for Barnacle Bill, as she waits for her forever home

Tuesday 22 October 2024

A Loggerhead turtle that has been stuck in Guernsey for almost a year now, having her relocation stalled several times due to paperwork problems, may have found temporary accommodation in the meantime.

The documents are all lined up and ready on the Guernsey side, but there have been numerous setbacks in finding a new home for the lost loggerhead known as Barnacle Bill.

Gran Canaria was the first choice, but due to complications the GSPCA has instead explored destinations such as Cape Verde, Turkey, Bermuda, Azores, and many others.

Pictured: Barnacle Bill weighed just 700g, but has now hit a healthy weight of 3.3kgs. She was just 6 inches long, but is now a lengthy 18inches.

Now it’s hoped a specialised centre in the UK might be able to take on the care of the turtle.

Steve Byrne is the GSPCA Manager.

“The good news is this week we are going to speak to Brighton Sealife in the hope they can take on her care and the Royal Navy may help get her to the Med like they did recently for other turtles which were rescued last year and had similar issues getting them to a country abroad for their release," he said.

“We were overjoyed to hear recently that nine turtles were helped by the Royal Navy to be returned to warmer waters. We are now very hopeful to get Bill to join a similar trip and will of course keep everyone up to date.”

It’s as the GSCPA enters another busy period, as the first seal of the season was taken into their care, but potentially only briefly. Roar the Seal could be heading to the UK, as the animal charity are taking on works.
