More machines recalled

Sunday 03 May 2020

More washing machines, produced by Whirlpool, which owns the Hotpoint and Indesit brands, have been recalled with a small number believed to be installed in homes in Guernsey.

Trading Standards have issued a list of the latest models to be added to the recall list, after others were recalled towards the end of last year.

A spokesperson said:

"We have been in contact with local retailers and we believe that a small number of these models have been sold in Guernsey. Because of this we urge anyone who has a Hotpoint or Indesit washing machine which was manufactured between 2014 and 2018 to check their machine against the new list, even if they have been told in the past that their model is not affected."

The additional models now included in the recall list are:

  • WMAQB 641P UK
  • WMAQB 721P UK
  • WMAQB 741G UK
  • WMAQB 741P UK
  • WMAQF 621P UK.L
  • WMAQF 641G UK
  • WMAQF 641P UK
  • WMAQF 721P UK
  • WMAQG 641G UK
  • WMAQG 641P UK
  • WMAQG 721P UK
  • WMAQG 721P UK.M
  • WMAQG 741P UK.M
  • WMAQL 621P UK
  • WMAQL 641P UK
  • WMAQL 721A UK
  • WMAQL 721P UK
  • WMAQL 721P UK.M
  • WMAQL 741G UK
  • WMAQL 741P UK
  • WMSAQG 621G UK

All of the washing machines listed above should be unplugged and not be used until it's been confirmed as safe to use.

Trading Standards said that might take longer than usual due to the lockdown measures.

"Unfortunately installing these machines requires an engineer to visit your home, which is not permitted under the current lockdown rules," said a spokesperson, "however you may be able to receive a replacement if you are able and willing to install it yourself. Meanwhile if you think you have an affected model then unplug it and do not use it until you have confirmed whether or not your machine is included in the recall."

Whirlpool has set up a website to deal with the recalls which can be found HERE and a telephone hotline which can be reached on 0800 316 1442.

Trading Standards said it's a tricky time but the machines shouldn't be used.

"We understand that this can be incredibly inconvenient and frustrating at the best of times, let alone during this difficult period, but we urge people to protect their safety by following the instructions above and to protect their health by being patient while waiting for installations of machines to start again.

"We understand that people who have already registered should be contacted by Whirlpool or Colin Torode (Valpy’s), who are acting on Whirlpools behalf. We understand that a replacement machine is only being offered if the old machine is available to be taken away. People who have not checked their machine should do so as soon as possible since there is a very real fire risk and the sooner you register the sooner you should get a replacement once installations are able to be carried out.

"Trading Standards are not in control of the recall, which is being run by Whirlpool, but we may be able to provide help if you are struggling to check and register your machine. Trading Standards will continue to provide updates as we become aware of more information, and if you need any guidance please do not hesitate to contact us by emailingtradingstandards@gov.gg. You can also call us on 234567 and leave a message and we will do our best to call you back as soon as possible.
