More electric vehicle charging points planned

Friday 27 September 2019

There could soon be public charging points for electric vehicles at the Bridge, and the Salerie and Odeon car parks in St Peter Port.

The Committee for the Environment & Infrastructure has asked for permission to put the new infrastructure in place, to add to the existing public EV charging points at North Beach car park.

If these plans get approved, two new charging stations would be put in parking spaces at both Salerie Corner and the Odeon car parks, and another two would be installed on La Crocq Pier, St Sampson.

The only public charging points at the moment are the ones at North Beach, and E&I said usage there has increased from 60 charging sessions in the first six months of 2018, to 146 in the first six months of 2019.

Rather than having to subscribe to a national scheme, the charging stations can be accessed easily by both locals and visiting drivers through a free app. All the charging stations in Guernsey can also be accessed through the same app.

The app gives access to the charging and payment systems, with users charged for the electricity that they use through the online payment system once charging sessions have finished.

At the three new locations temporary signs will be going on display shortly, to let drivers know of the proposed changes to parking there.

It is estimated installation work could start later this year, subject to planning approval being given.

More charging units could be installed after that if demand keeps growing.

The budget for the three new charging points is £100,000, which will come from the island's Integrated Transport Strategy Capital which is primarily derived from vehicle First Registration Duty.

Deputy Barry Brehaut, President of the Committee for the Environment & Infrastructure, believes it is important to meet environmental objectives.

“The number of electric, plug in Hybrid and Hybrid vehicles being registered continues to grow year on year in all jurisdictions. At the end of December 2015 there were 28 fully electric vehicles registered on Guernsey, there are now 337 fully electric vehicles registered, along with 444 Hybrids and 36 electric motorcycles. While the total number of EV’s is around 0.5% of the total number of registered vehicles, it is important that in order to meet environmental objectives, people transition to clean air transport options and this along with improved walking and cycling infrastructure will help support that aim.

"The chosen locations are convenient for people who may not have their own charging stations for example, those who use residential on street, amenity and business parking. Therefore the expansion of publically available E.V. charging network will be of benefit to people who have or importantly, are considering changing to an electric vehicle.”

Information on publically available E.V. charging can be found online at gov.gg/sustainabletransport and details of Guernsey's First Registration Duty can be found at: gov.gg/vehicleownership.
