Did you know Mohamed Said Fakhry?

Wednesday 01 July 2020

Anyone with a claim against the estate of a Saudi tobacco tycoon has until September to register with the executor of his will, which was registered in Guernsey.

Sheik Mohamed Said Fakhry passed away on 31 January, 2019, and his son was appointed executor of his will.

Mr Fakhry junior is based in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and can be contacted at his Ideal Clinics where he is a Consultant Ophthalmologist.

Sheik Mohamed Said Fakhry had also been based in Jeddah, where he passed away last year.

Guernsey's Prescription (Amended) Law, 1997, states that prior to the distribution of any personal property belonging to the deceased, the executors or administrators of the estate must publish information in La Gazette Officielle to alert anyone with a claim.

If no one makes a claim by the specified date, 26 September 2020, the executors or administrators of the will may distribute all of the property.

Sheik Mohamed Said Fakhry was Chairman of a company named after himself which was established in 1948, and was the distributor of Malboro cigarettes into Saudi Arabia.

His company was also responsible for the importation of confectionary and foodstuffs, industrial work clothing and the manufacture of building materials including tiles, blocks and marble. According to some reports, the company employed 250 people.

The sale of cigarettes is strictly controlled in some parts of Saudi Arabia, with a ban on the import and distribution of the products introduced in 2004 leading to a "thriving black market". The price of a packet of cigarettes nearly doubled - with reports suggesting the price of a packet of Marlboro going from SR5 to SR9.

A 2012 report into the matter cited a representative of Mohamed Said Fakhry Company and Partners in Jeddah, who said the price increase was not a tax on cigarettes and was the fault of the manufacturer passing on increased costs.
