Inmates in Guernsey Prison are permitted to use prescribed cannabis products, the prison’s Governor has confirmed.
Governor John De Carteret told Express that the prison “will only be prescribing cannabis-based medicinal products as per the NICE guidelines (NG144), which were last updated on March 22 2021”.
Those guidelines recommend prescription for limited conditions including chronic pain, intractable nausea and vomiting, spasticity, and severe treatment-resistant epilepsy.
Mr De Carteret added that any product which falls outside these guidelines “will be denatured and destroyed by the healthcare team in accordance with the Misuse of Drugs (Bailiwick of Guernsey) Ordinance 1997”.
