Guernsey residents can now lawfully import cannabis products that have been prescribed to them by healthcare clinics off-island.
Health & Social Care has approved the legislative changes, after realising that some patients who might have been eligible to use medicinal cannabis weren't able to access it locally because doctors didn't feel able or weren't appropriately qualified to prescribe it.

"These recent legislative changes build on the amendments made by HSC in 2019," explained Medical Director, Dr Peter Rabey. "They will allow the lawful importation of prescribed medical cannabis from the UK through the establishment of a licensing process. They will also extend the ability to prescribe medicinal cannabis to include GPs rather than just specialists.
"Occasionally there are unforeseen practical barriers when legislation is amended. As soon as this was identified, HSC prioritised the necessary changes to allow islanders access to medicinal cannabis."
The legislative changes came into force on 28 September 2020.
