Measles vaccination rates remain high

Sunday 21 January 2024

In light of an increase in measles cases in the UK due to low vaccination uptake, Public Health in Guernsey would like reassure the public that local vaccination rates remain high.

A surge in cases has led to the UK declaring a national 'health incident' and its understood this is due to uptake of the jab falling to an average of 85%.

Public Health said: "Measles is a highly contagious disease, which normally resolves after seven to 10 days. However, it can lead to serious problems if it infects other parts of the body, such as the lungs or brain. Complications can include pneumonia, meningitis, blindness, and seizures. Those most at risk include babies and young children, those who are pregnant, and those with a weakened immune system."

The last reported case of measles in Guernsey was back in 2012.

"We are pleased with our current vaccination rates for MMR locally," said Guernsey's Associate Director of Public Health, Alex Hawkins-Drew.

"Our data demonstrates that the number of children receiving two doses of a measles containing vaccine by the age of five years meets the WHO target of ≥95%. However, we know that some families have chosen not to have their children vaccinated against measles and we would like to take this opportunity to strongly encourage them to take up this offer.

"For a person to receive full protection from measles they should receive two doses of the MMR vaccine. MMR is available as a catch up vaccine free of charge, up to the age of 25."
