Maternity worker bolsters skills with new qualification

Friday 09 August 2024

A maternity support worker gained an advanced qualification in breastfeeding in the middle of national breastfeeding week.

Jo Ingrouille has become an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant after 18-years' service working in the community midwives' team.

She completed dozens of hours of specialist education alongside a year of study to allow her to teach breastfeeding techniques, provide information and support to families and advise on any problems.

Ms Ingrouille wants to highlight the benefits to mothers and babies of natural feeding, saying it promotes emotional bonds and lowers the risk of infections.

“But it may take time and practice and can be a daunting process. Some mothers can feel unsure or uncomfortable breastfeeding in public, so it is important families within our community know they are supported to feed their baby how and where they wish,” she said.

“I am passionate about ensuring all women have access to breastfeeding help and support to normalise breastfeeding.

“I have gained not only extensive theoretical knowledge on how to succeed with breastfeeding but also worldwide support and access to up-to-date knowledge that I am excited to pass onto families, and colleagues, in Guernsey.”

Every young family in Guernsey has access to a health visitor who support children under the age of five including Bosom Buddies which runs two weekly sessions for breastfeeding at Bright Beginnings on Tuesdays and at the Guille-Allés Library on Fridays.

Alex-Hawkins-Drew, Associate Director for Public Health, said the qualification would bolster local services and showed a huge level of commitment.

“We understand that breastfeeding is not possible for all parents and support each family’s right to choose how they wish to feed their baby. However, national data demonstrates that many families report that they have stopped breastfeeding earlier than they wished to due to lack of support and this is something that must be addressed,” she said.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Jo for her commitment to continuing to provide this level of support and service.”
