Make it a 'Brew Monday', not 'Blue Monday'

Monday 16 January 2023

Guernsey Samaritans want to bust the "Blue Monday myth" saying they is no such thing as the "saddest day of the year".

The supportive charity which aims to prevent suicides said it is time to dispel the idea that the third Monday of January is particularly difficult.

The charity says its listening volunteers are "consistently busy every day of the year" revealing they respond to a call for help every 10 seconds nationally.

Now, the Samaritans want to turn the myth about today on its head and into something meaningful by changing it to ‘Brew Monday’, by encouraging people to stay connected with friends and family through a cuppa and a catch-up.

Guernsey Samaritans volunteer Josie, said: “It’s simple, there is no such thing as Blue Monday.

"People can feel low at any point in the day, week or year and we want them to know that they are never alone," she said.

“Forget Blue Monday and instead check in with people who you care about for a cuppa and a chat as talking really can save lives. Our volunteers are available around the clock to listen to anyone who needs support this Brew Monday and every other day of the month and year, 24/7.”

The charity has around 20,000 volunteers nationally, but needs more locally.

It will be running a training course in February, as it also looks to mark its Diamond Anniversary this year having started in 1963.

Josie said: “everyone has it in them to be a Samaritan but you will need to be non-judgemental, accepting of others and open- minded. It doesn’t necessarily matter if you’ve gone through difficult times yourself, what matters is that you want to help people – all kinds of people, from all walks of life.

Talking to callers is always different and always interesting – no two conversations are the same. It’s a privilege to have people confiding in you, and it’s hugely rewarding.”
