"Major domestic and global challenges" for Liz Truss

Monday 05 September 2022

Liz Truss was announced as the UK's new Prime Minister today, with her election as Conservative Party leader confirmed at lunchtime, with Guernsey's Chief Minister congratulating her on her appointment soon after.

As Prime Minister, Ms Truss is the leader of Her Majesty's Government and has ultimate responsibility for the policies and decisions it makes.

While Guernsey is not part of the UK, it has numerous links with the UK Government, notably through representation in matters of defence and international relations.

Guernsey's Chief Minister, Deputy Peter Ferbrache acknowledged the news that Rt Hon Liz Truss MP will become the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on behalf of the States of Guernsey in a statement issued shortly after the election results had been announced.

He said that the "wider British family" will be wishing her luck as she seeks to provide "security, stability and success" amid "major domestic and global challenges".

“On behalf of the people of Guernsey, I would like to congratulate Liz Truss on her success in becoming the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom," he said. "As part of the British family, Guernsey has very close connections with the UK. Our links are constitutional, historical, social and economic, and therefore touch all aspects of Islanders lives.

"For that reason the States of Guernsey values what are very good relationships with politicians across the UK political spectrum and with officials in many UK Departments. I was especially pleased to be in London to sign the new Reciprocal Health Agreement between the Bailiwick of Guernsey and the UK Government which is itself a testament to the strength and closeness of our relationship.

"There are undoubtedly major domestic and global challenges facing the new Prime Minister as she takes office, and we wish her the best in providing security, stability and success for the country and the wider British family in these uncertain times.”

Ms Truss appointment was welcomed by Guernsey's political lead for international affairs as well.

Deputy Jonathan Le Tocq is the island's External Affairs Minister and he met Ms Truss while working within that remit last year.

Ms Truss' election as Conservative Party leader was secured by 81,000 votes, against 60,000 in favour of Rishi Sunak.

She succeeds Boris Johnson as Prime Minister and is due to meet the Queen at Balmoral this afternoon in order to be asked to form a government.
