Lihou patient needs hospital treatment

Saturday 08 June 2024

A Land Rover had to be driven on to Lihou's causeway to pick up a patient needing hospital treatment.

The usually car free island - accessible only by foot or using the warden's tractor - relaxed its rules to allow the St John Ambulance and Rescue Service to bring its Land Rover across after an incident on Thursday.

A call for help was made after the patient was injured on the causeway.

A double crewed ambulance made its way to the Lihou headland just after 13:00, with an incident officer deployed in the ambulance Land Rover shortly afterwards.

The Lihou warden - a trained first aider - waited with the patient on the causeway, while the ambulance crew made their way across on foot.

After the patient was assessed it was decided that the Land Rover would drive on to the causeway so the patient could be carried back to the Lihou headland. They were then put into the ambulance and taken to the Emergency Department at the PEH.

This incident was one of 25 cases the ambulance service attended to during a 24 hour period. 17 of those call outs were made between midday and 19:00 on Thursday.
