Lé Viaër Marchi returns tonight

Monday 02 July 2018

Guernsey’s annual Lé Viaër Marchi celebrating the best island traditions is taking place tonight at Saumarez Park from 17:00 until sunset.

Lé Viaër Marchi includes traditional Guernsey food and dancing while The Folk and Costume Museum also hosts a special event during the evening with costumed-actors bringing exhibitions to life and demonstrating old Guernsey traditions.

The popularity of the original ‘Guernsey Evening’ held on the courtyard in 1970, fuelled the growth of Lé Viaër Marchi into a-now much-anticipated annual event. Lé Viaër Marchi remains themed around ‘A Guernsey Evening’ and it attracts crowds of approximately 5,000 people every year including both local and visitors.

Organised by the National Trust of Guernsey, Lé Viaër Marchi or ‘The Old Market’ is aimed at being "a fun evening of traditional Guernsey food and entertainment. Running for over 40 years, this annual community gathering is in the heart of Guernsey, the island's historic Saumarez Park to celebrate Guernsey culture and embrace local traditions."

While traditional local singers and dancers take to the stage, the event will also celebrate new generations with artists and creatives demonstrating the local crafts, products and produce which Guernsey has to offer today.

This evening there will also be Punch and Judy and Crown and Anchor, while the refreshments available will include beanjar, gache, Guernsey biscuits, Rocquettes Cider and more, all to sample and buy.

It is free entry for Children aged 15 and under, if accompanied by an adult while adult entry is £6.

There is free parking at Home Farm from 16:00, with the event running from 17:00 until sunset.
