A large chunk of the cliff wall abutting La Coupee has collapsed, leading to the Seigneur of Sark calling for a survey of the iconic walkway.
La Coupee spans the distance between Sark and Little Sark. It’s a popular spot for tourists and an essential lifeline for those living in Little Sark.
Christopher Beaumont posted a video of the rockfall on X over the weekend.
Large (1000 ton) chunk of the eastern side of La Coupee succumbed to the weather this week. ????

You can still get to Little Sark as the roadway is unaffected, I’m pleased to say. pic.twitter.com/78QjlRXS2W
“It hasn’t been caused by coastal erosion,” he told Express. “This fall is due to the wet weather getting into the rocks.”
He stressed that the collapse seems to have happened far enough away that the integrity of the road hasn’t been impacted, but said “it does highlight that it’s not as stable as we’d like to think”.
“Wouldn’t it be good to have a survey? To at least find out what the future holds for La Coupee?”
It’s not the first time the cliffs surrounding La Coupee have slipped. In 2010 there was a major landslide that took out the path leading down to La Grande Greve.
“What do we do about Little Sark if La Coupee were to disappear?” mused Mr Beaumont.
Express has reached out to the government of Sark to find out about the future of La Coupee and whether a survey could be undertaken.
