The house of the feudal lord of Sark could become home to a private members club complete with fine dining, a gym and wellness facilities if a property investment company succeed in a multi-million-pound takeover of the Barclay’s estate in the island.

Seigneur Christopher Beaumont has signed a letter of intent with the Sark Property Company, of which is he a director, to convert part of the historic La Seigneurie to members for “socialising, relaxing, working, private dining, and more”.

But the ambition will only be turned into a contract if SPC succeeds in its bid to acquire the commercial and residential properties owned by the Barclay family which account for around a quarter of all property in Sark. 

The Company say it’s still in the “final steps of submitting an offer” with local and international investors after it rubbished national newspaper reports that a £60m bid was on the brink of being approved by the board in June.   

Swen Lorenz, CEO of the Sark Property Company, said bringing a private members club to the island would “enhance the appeal of the island for potential new residents, especially younger ones who can contribute actively to the economy. 

“The club will only be established if we complete our deal for the Barclay estate, and it will be part of our broader plans to rejuvenate the island and build a resilient and successful community.” 

If that comes to pass the Company could take on a long-term lease and work with Mr Beaumont as the occupier to draw up a plan using “world class experts” including whether there's space for extra services such as a pool and wellness suite.

“La Seigneurie is an historic building and being able to operate a club within its storied walls would be a privilege. As part of its lease, the club will be obliged to help to secure the future of the estate, title and fief. Just as in all other aspects of its plans, the company will also work to ensure that Sark’s unique character is preserved,” Mr Lorenz added. 

The Company says Mr Beaumont and his family would continue to live in the house while it took over responsibility for running the club which it hopes will create new jobs for the community.  

It assured that the popular gardens would be unaffected and would continue to be run as visitor attraction by the charitable trust. 

At this stage, the letter of intent is non-binding for both parties. Any potential contract negotiated at a later stage will be a related party contract and require approval of the independent board members.
