'Zombie' and 'cyclone' knives are now banned from the Bailiwick with a new definition for flick knives meaning more of those are also now prohibited by Guernsey Border Agency.
The GBA has updated the list of offensive weapons within the Import Control Order, banning items which cannot be brought into the Bailiwick.
The changes will bring the Bailiwick in line with the UK's Offensive Weapons Act 2019.
The previous definition for a flick knife was deemed inadequate as it was too specific, and it allowed for the import of knives which would not be allowed to be imported into the UK.
The new definition is: “Any knife which has a blade which opens automatically [...] by manual pressure applied to a button, spring, or other device in or attached to the knife [...].”
'Zombie knives' and 'cyclone knives' are also prohibited in the UK and now the Bailiwick too.
The Committee for Home Affairs has approved the changes and said that while Guernsey is never obliged to follow UK prohibitions and restrictions, the Committee decided in this case that it was a sensible approach "to ensure that no harmful or dangerous weapons can easily make their way into the Bailiwick. It took advise from the UK Home Office Crime Reduction Directorate and the GBA also consulted with the Lead for International Trade Relations in the States of Guernsey".
The States of Alderney have also agreed the equivalent amendments to their Import Control Order with the Amendment Order coming into force in both islands last month.
