Judge delays sentencing: “I’m giving you an opportunity to prove yourself”

Friday 07 May 2021

Just five days after being released from youth detention, a 21-year-old was charged with behaving in a disorderly manner at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital.

On 28 March, Calum Steer was found face down in the doorway of Hansen’s on Le Pollet. He was in a state of undress and had blood on the side of his head.

Police Officers found him and took him to Emergency Department to treat his injury. While at the PEH, Steer started acting in an aggressive manner, kicking out, flailing, and touching himself inappropriately.

The Court was told that he was consistently warned about his behaviour, but carried on regardless.

Steer was sentenced to community service last year and was handed a suspended sentence for a series of offences, including theft and assaulting a police officer.

He ended up serving the suspended three-month sentence in youth detention and had only just been released before committing the latest offence.

Advocate Sam Steel said Steer couldn’t remember his actions or being taken to the PEH, and has since apologised for what happened.

In a surprise turn, Judge Graeme McKerrell decided to delay sentencing, offering Steer the chance to prove himself.

“I’m giving you an opportunity to find employment and anything to add to your probation report that might help you,” said Judge McKerrell.

His sentencing has been adjourned for six weeks.
