A review into how Guernsey Electricity and Jersey Electricity could work together for future energy generation has been proposed by members of P&R.
A consolidated Channel Islands electricity company is being discussed and is the focus of an amendment lodged against the upcoming Electricity Strategy Policy Letter.
Deputies Mark Helyar and Jonathan Le Tocq want to direct Policy and Resources to commission a review of the benefits of greater collaboration between GEL and JEL.
If approved, the review findings would need to be brought to the States Assembly before the end of next year.
Deputies Helyar and Le Tocq said: “The amendment directs the Policy & Resources Committee to undertake a review of how Guernsey Electricity Limited and Jersey Electricity Limited might work together more collaboratively, and what the benefits and challenges would be in potentially establishing a single, consolidated Channel Islands electricity business, with the aim that this may lead to greater Channel Islands energy resilience in the longer-term and better outcomes for customers.
“The Policy & Resources Committee has raised this idea in its discussion with government of Jersey counterparts and is aware that they are supportive of this approach.
“The Policy & Resources Committee will seek to jointly commission this piece of work with the Government of Jersey. The review should take account of the interests of Alderney and Sark through consultation, and should also include consultation with the States’ Trading Supervisory Board and the Committee for the Environment & Infrastructure.”
Environment and Infrastructure’s Policy Letter on the future of energy generation in Guernsey will be debated later this week.
