Jacques wins global art prize

Guernsey teenager, Jacques Loveridge has won The Sovereign Art Foundation global student prize.

The 16-year-old Blanchelande College pupil’s Galactic Archway panorama has been selected by a judging panel after he won though the local round.

His spectacular entry was composed of nine photographs with a 1-minute exposure time stitched together to create a view of the Milky Way, distorted in an arch shape. 

His global win means he has scooped £800 for himself and £2,000 for his school, adding to prize money from winning the local public vote which earned him £400 and £1,000 for his school.  

Jacques is also helping to raise money for SAF Guernsey’s activities through the sale of prints of his winning piece, Galactic Archway.

The proceeds from each one sold will be split evenly between the artist and the Foundation. 

The Sovereign Art Foundation Students Prizes run in ten countries and are designed to celebrate the importance of art in education.

The global round saw 16 artworks by students from Gibraltar, Hong Kong, Isle of Man, London, Malta and Gozo, Portugal and Mauritius as well as two Guernsey entries.

Abigail Bran’s mixed media painting Malala was Guernsey’s other entry.

The finalists were previously named winners in their respective regions, selected either by a judging panel or clinching the popular vote from the public.  

The final jury comprised of professionals including: Catalina Swinburn, Chilean visualartist; Howard Bilton, Founder and Chairman of SAF; Joe, AKA ‘The Doodle Boy’; Joyce Ng, Head of Gallery & Exhibitions, Asia Society Hong Kong Centre; and Tiffany Pinkstone, Executive director of SAF.
