A team of independent parliamentary experts and election coordinators will virtually observe and analyse Guernsey's first fully island-wide election.
At the invitation of the Guernsey States Assembly & Constitution Committee, the independent team will conduct the first-ever Election Observation Mission to Guernsey.
The mission has been organised by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association's British Islands and Mediterranean Region. It will assess Guernsey's election against international standards, commitments and obligations as well as domestic laws.
The team was initially due to come over to Guernsey in person, however the mission will now go ahead virtually instead as a result of recent increases in covid-19 prevalence rates across Britain.
The observation team has already conducted a large part of the mission virtually, conducting research and interviews with a wide range of stakeholders, including Bailiwick Express.
“This will be the first election to which Guernsey has invited international observers," said Head of Mission, Jim Wells.
"We are honoured to be a part of this momentous opportunity. Election observation is a vital element of CPA BIMR’s commitment to enhance openness and transparency in parliamentary democracy across the Commonwealth.
"We look forward to observing the elections at this unprecedented time and following major electoral reform in Guernsey.”
Mr Wells is heading up an eight-person team that includes parliamentary observers, election experts and CPA BIMR election coordinators from Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, Wales, Ireland, the Netherlands and England.
A preliminary statement outlining the mission’s initial findings will be published within two days of the election. A closing report including recommendations will be published within two months of the election.
