International development charities highlighting their work

Thursday 12 December 2024

A 'Charities Showcase' is being held in town tonight as part of the Late Night Shopping event.

It's been organised by the Guernsey Overseas Aid & Development Commission, so that the charities it works with can demonstrate what they do and how that work helps others.

The event is being held upstairs at the Health Connections Shop in Market Square from 17:00 - 20:00 with free teas and coffees provided by Fairtrade Guernsey for everyone that drops by.

Seven local charities will have displays at this drop-in event with Christian Aid Guernsey, the Eleanor Foundation, Goal 50, Guernsey Aid, Kibera Farm Project, and The Tumaini Fund all confirmed to join Fairtrade Guernsey.

Deputy Chris Blin, President of the Guernsey Overseas Aid and Development Commission, said the Commission will also be providing general information on its own work.

“It amazes me how many international development charities are based in Guernsey considering the size of our population, as well as the life changing work they undertake all around the world. This comprises of a range of humanitarian initiatives including the provision of food and water, sanitation and hygiene, healthcare, education and livelihoods. The Commission has partnered with many of them in the past and seven charities will be participating in this event. It is an opportunity to celebrate these charities and for the public, in one location, to learn more about what they do and possibly how they can help. Anyone can drop in to look at the displays anytime between 5pm and 8pm. They can stay as long as they wish and perhaps have a chat with the charity representatives.

"Christmas is a time when we think of people less fortunate than ourselves, so it is a good chance to take a pause from our shopping and reflect on what we can do to help others. There will also be free coffee and tea kindly provided by the Fairtrade Guernsey to enjoy and to warm you up!”

A number of town shops will be open late tonight as the traditional late night shopping events continue in the run up to Christmas.

There will also be stall holders selling local crafts as well as charities, and some entertainment.
