"Election notice in the Gazette isn’t enough in modern world"

Tuesday 17 August 2021

A deferred Vale parish by-election is taking place tomorrow, and a local community group has launched an Information Hub to help parishioners get to know the candidates.

A by-election to replace Martyn Torode, who is leaving the parish, was meant to take place on 4 August. It’s now being held on Wednesday after being deferred in order to give parishioners more of a chance to engage and have their say.

The polling station will be open at the Vale Douzaine Room from 10:00 – 20:00. Ahead of the vote, Women in Public Life created an Information Hub on their website to promote the candidates and the role of the douzaine.

“Instead of waiting for candidates to knock on the door, everyone in the Vale can use our Information Hub to look through candidate leaflets online,” said Chair of Women In Public Life, Shelaine Green.

“Voters can also use it to find out more about the role of a Douzenier and how the parish election process works.”

Women in Public Life has information on how to vote, who can vote, and a full breakdown of a role of a Douzenier. You can find out more HERE.

“An official election notice in the Gazette Officielle simply isn’t enough in today's modern world,” said Ms Green.

Each candidate has either a personal statement or link to a manifesto published on WPL’s website.

Anne Setters was a lecturer at the College of Further Education who is ‘keen on parish events’; Nigel Leale hopes to apply a ‘common sense approach’ to parochial decisions; and Mary Lowe wants to follow up her 26 years as a Deputy by serving the parish in a new capacity.

Women in Public Life is run by volunteers and supports the “women of Guernsey to stand for public office.”
