"Iceberg, dead ahead!"

Alderney resembled an iceberg north of Guernsey yesterday, after the island was the worst hit of the Channel Islands during this week's snowy weather.

Despite a red weather warning issued on Wednesday 28 February for the Bailiwick not resulting in any more snow of any significance, Alderney remains covered in the white stuff after heavy snow fall on Tuesday.

Images were shared of the island, taken from the north of Guernsey, depicting exactly how much coverage Alderney had received.

While flights were able to land and take off from Guernsey Airport during Wednesday, Alderney Airport runway has been closed for most of the week. 

The disruption is expected to continue on the island for another day at least.

Conditions remain treacherous in some areas of Alderney with icy roads and foot paths. States Works have been clearing what they can to enable people to get around safely.

Danny Kelleher and his team were working on Victoria Street earlier this morning. Our reporter described them as "like horses going back to the barn" - when Mr Kelleher was asked to stop for a moment he and the other staff carried on working saying they wanted to get finished because: "We are dying for a cup of coffee!"

Express Alderney reporter Krys Page said "they looked worn out but are doing their best to take care of the needs of the people of Alderney". It was also reported that a water pipe burst on Longis Road causing an hour or so disturbance in the island.

At Braye Harbour supplies have been reaching Alderney throughout the week. Harbour staff kept working throughout the heaviest snow fall to ensure the supermarket shelves were stocked up where possible.

The wintry weather meant some disruption to medical services in Alderney this week too.

The Alderney RNLI all weather lifeboat Roy Barker I was launched on 28 February 2018 at 09:45 to collect two Alderney Doctors who had been stranded in Guernsey for two days. They had been unable to return to the island due to heavy snow fall.

Both Doctors arrived back on the island at 12:45 on Wednesday and "immediately returned to work on a snow covered Alderney" - Guernsey's Committee for Health and Social Care said despite this there was a GP on duty at all times this week in Alderney.
