HSC aims to develop autism services with new Paediatrician

Saturday 27 February 2021

Dr Amma Oppong has been appointed as the Bailiwick's new Consultant Community Paediatrician, with her experience in autism assessment viewed as an essential asset to the island.

Dr Oppong has a depth of experience in identifying and assessing children with neurodevelopmental needs.

After spending time in Botswana, she founded ‘Space 2 Grow’, which is a specialist child and adolescent clinic that raised awareness of the needs of disabled children.

“One service area in community paediatric services identified as being in need of development is autism services for children and young people,” said HSC Medical Director, Dr Peter Rabey.

Dr Oppong, when discussing her appointment, said reviewing how autism is identified in the island is high on her priority list.

“Whilst support for children and young people has been provided by both the Committee for Health & Social Care and the Committee for Education, Sport & Culture, in the absence of a formal diagnosis of autism, clearly a priority for the Bailiwick will be the review and possible re-design of an autism assessment pathway.”
