A local man, who hit "rock bottom" and resulted to living in a bunker at Jerbourg, has appeared in Guernsey's Magistrate's Court for stealing alcohol and groceries from a shop in what was described as a cry for help.
Jason Crowther, 46, was in a "very difficult place" when he went into Iceland and stole two bottles of Smirnoff vodka last month.
He had been homeless since coming out of prison, his benefits had been stopped and alcohol dependency had become a problem for him. Defence Advocate Phoebe Cobb said Crowther was cold and hungry, and he was keen to be arrested and remanded in custody.
The following day, the defendant returned to Iceland and told a Supervisor, "I'm taking these items. Arrest me".

He made full admissions to his crimes when interviewed by Guernsey Police.
"Homelessness is a hidden problem in this island," Judge Gary Perry said on sentencing. "It doesn't get the publicity or the help that it deserves."
Judge Perry said the probation order and community service order, which had been suggested, were "unrealistic" for Crowther, but decided not to send him directly to prison.
He was given a suspended sentence of two months, which he will have to serve if he commits another crime within the next two years.
"That puts matters in your hands," Judge Perry added. "I think that's all that any justice system can do for you."
