Hautes Capelles Primary School has been given the Guernsey Healthy Schools award following a number of initiatives introduced by staff and pupils.
The school is the second in Guernsey to achieve the new award, which has been launched locally but is based on a scheme running successfully in Essex, England.
The award is being presented by Lady Corder, the Lieutenant Governor's wife who used to work as a nurse so has a special interest in health matters.
Lady Corder is due to present Hautes Capelles Primary School with their Guernsey Healthy Schools award during an assembly to be attended by all pupils and staff. Headteacher, Sue Coughlin, says “We are very proud to achieve the Healthy Schools Award in particular the recognition of the schools strength in promoting and supporting the emotional health and wellbeing for the children in our school."
Alun Williams, who is Guernsey's Lifelong Learning Manager, had visited the school during its work to achieve Healthy Schools status. He says “We are delighted that Lady Corder has agreed to present the Guernsey Healthy Schools award to Hautes Capelles Primary School. The staff and pupils have worked extremely hard to meet all the criteria. We have been really impressed at the very high standards achieved.
Schools are increasingly demonstrating a commitment to ensuring that the health and wellbeing of young people is a key priority and that this has been reflected in the hard work put in by pupils and staff at Hautes Capelles.”
The Healthy Schools programme is designed to support and strengthen the schools’ PSHE curriculum and enable schools to audit their practice and celebrate the good work they are doing to support and develop young people’s health and wellbeing. It is based on a scheme running in Essex, England, but the local Healthy Schools programme has been designed to support Guernsey’s Children and Young People’s Plan and Healthy Weight Strategy.
The award includes standards that are required to be met in the following areas:
The Healthy Schools award requires a whole-school approach to be taken, engaging pupils, staff and the community.
Over the past year, staff at Hautes Capelles have worked with pupils towards reaching each criteria, before submitting a report to the Healthy Schools Team for validation. Three members of the Team visited the school for half a day to discuss the achievements and evidence submitted and verified that the standards had been met.
