Vicky Godley and Keiran James have been appointed the 'Designate Principals' of Guernsey's two 11-18 colleges which will open in the coming years under the new system of secondary education.
Mrs Godley is the current Headteacher of La Mare De Carteret High School, while Kieran James, is Acting Headteacher of the Grammar School and Sixth Form Centre. Both will take up their new roles in September 2019.
That means that from the next school year, until the transformation of secondary education is finally finished, Mrs Godley will preside over the current La Mare and Les Beaucamps high schools, while Mr James will be Head of the current Grammar site, which will then be known as Les Varendes High School as well as St Sampson's High School.
For the first year - September 2019-July 2020 - Mr James will work alongside Annabel Bolt, who is the Headteacher of St Sampson's High School, and Mrs Godley will work alongside Martin Haimes, who is the current Acting Headteacher of Les Beaucamps. No decisions have been made, or publicly confirmed, beyond that, but previously ESC has said that there will be teaching positions available for all current teachers who want one.

With those new staffing structures starting to take shape, the Executive Headteacher under the new system of secondary education, Liz Coffey, said;
“I am pleased to see the staffing structure of the new school take a major step forward with these appointments. It is important that the leadership of the new school shapes the future staffing structure and curriculum model, as part of one school.”
Deputy Matt Fallaize, President of the Committee for Education, Sport & Culture, said:
“These appointments are a critical step in the development of our secondary education model based on two 11-18 colleges operating as one school.
Vicky and Kieran will continue to work closely with Liz Coffey, the Executive Headteacher, to shape and develop the future vision and operating model of the new school.”

Mrs Godley came to Guernsey with her family in September 2011, when she was appointed Deputy Headteacher at La Mare de Carteret High school. Previously she held a variety of senior leadership roles in mixed ability schools in Sheffield and Manchester, as well as working as a lead inspector for OFSTED.
She was appointed Headteacher at La Mare High in April 2012 and since then has been credited with leading the school through significant changes, including an improvement in average attainment at GCSE level.
She said:
“I am thrilled to achieve the role of Designate Principal within the new transformational schools framework. It presents an exciting challenge where I will continue to work hard for island children. I look forward to working with colleagues, parents and students to ensure we maintain high quality learning experiences whichcreate opportunity and ambition for all of our young people.”
Mr James, who was educated locally, was previously Deputy Headteacher of the Grammar School and Director of Sixth Form Studies at the Sixth Form Centre, before he took up his position as Acting Headteacher just a few months ago, in September 2018. He has also taught at schools in England, New Zealand, Portugal and the Solomon Islands.
He said:
“I am delighted be part of the team leading the transformation of Secondary andPost-16 Education. This is an exciting time and an enormous opportunity for education locally, and I look forward greatly to the development of One School in two colleges that will be great places in which to learn and to work. I am committed to ensuring continuity and a smooth transition for our students and staff, and to enabling them to make the most of the opportunities it presents.”
While Mrs Godley will be Designate Principal of Les Beaucamps and La Mare high schools from this September, Mr James will be Designate Principal of Les Varendes and St Sampson’s High School, with education at Les Varendes coming's to a complete end in summer 2023.
Under the transition plans announced by ESC last year, from September 2021 all Year 7 students will enter one of the new Colleges at Les Beaucamps or St Sampson’s.
