A new exhibition, The Fabric of Guernsey is now open at Art for Guernsey's Mill Street gallery, aiming to delve into the rich history and enduring appeal of the iconic guernsey.
Renowned local artist Sally Ede-Golightly has created a series of original artworks inspired by the island's heritage and the distinctive garment. Each artwork will be paired with a limited-edition guernsey, adorned with a bespoke stitched detail.
The exhibition celebrates the guernsey's journey from its humble beginnings as a practical garment for fishermen and farmers to its international recognition. It has been worn by royalty and admired by sailors, solidifying its place in history.
Jock Pettitt, Director of Art for Guernsey, expressed his excitement about the project.
"This is an exhibition unlike any we have undertaken, combining the artworks which respond to the history of Guernsey, through the lens of the iconic garment, with the garment itself, a staple in every true Guernsey wardrobe. We have explored Guernsey in all its natural beauty before, and we have explored its history, but this is a unique opportunity to bring the two threads together creatively through Sally’s artworks, that have a sensitivity and allure which do justice to the stories we have uncovered in collaboration with the team at Le Tricoteur."

Artist Sally Ede-Golightly shared her enthusiasm for the garment.
"The history and character of a guernsey jumper is one I’ve loved throughout my adult life. When we started to discuss this exhibition I felt that some of the images had already been in my mind for years and I was excited to put them down in paint. I love the way that Le Tricoteur represents our island heritage and history with its beautifully produced guernseys.”
Rachael Lainé, owner of Le Tricoteur, emphasized the significance of the collaboration: "In our 60th anniversary year, we were very proud to be asked to collaborate with Art for Guernsey and contribute to this beautiful exhibition. Seeing this project as an excellent opportunity to revisit our own company’s history, we have purposefully revived some of our archive designs for the first time in decades.
“We consider guernseys part of our living history, paying homage to the centuries of knitting history on the island as well honouring the hand knitters and linkers from all over the island who are employed at Le Tricoteur to this day.”
The exhibition promises to be a visual feast, offering a fascinating exploration of Guernsey's cultural heritage and the enduring appeal of its iconic garment.
Those wanting to get a peak at the Fabric of Guernsey exhibition have a month, as it will close its doors to the public on Saturday, 15 December, 2023. Visitors can view the exhibition during Art for Guernsey's regular opening hours, which are Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00 - 17:00.
