Guernsey to finalise "Guernsey-only proposal" with Brittany Ferries

Tuesday 05 November 2024

Guernsey's Economic Development Committee has announced that it has almost finalised a new agreement with Brittany Ferries - that does not include Jersey.

It follows a 10-month joint tender process with the Government of Jersey.

Last week, Guernsey announced that Brittany Ferries was our preferred bidder, whilst Jersey seems to prefer the offering from Danish operator DFDS.

Jersey has still not made a definitive decision though. Yesterday it said that a decision would be announced on Tuesday, but one has not yet been forthcoming.

Regardless of what Jersey is doing, Guernsey's Economic Development Committee today said it is now evaluating a "Guernsey-only" approach and it expects to finalise the contract within the next 10 days.

The agreement will enable Brittany Ferries to publish its schedules for the upcoming year in mid-November.

Deputy Neil Inder, President of ED, stated: "We are committed to finalising the contractual arrangements with Brittany Ferries and ensuring a robust inter-island service.

"We are also excited about the opportunities to strengthen our relationships with Normandy and Brittany."

Economic Development will be meeting with Brittany Ferries and key stakeholders this week to discuss specific service details and scheduling.

A further update from Jersey's Government regarding a decision on their island's passenger and freight services is due this evening – though it is understand that a final decision may come later in the week.

Jersey's Government said it had "further questions" for the two frontrunners and held urgent meetings to gain more detailed information relating to their financial stability, and had received legal advice regarding the future of the island's ferry services.
