A senior politician from Guernsey will assist a team scrutinising the operation of the upcoming UK general election, as part of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.
Independent observer missions are commonplace across the democracies of the Commonwealth, and now Deputy Heidi Soulsby, Vice-President of Policy & Resources, will be the first locally to spend a week reviewing the third British general election in seven years.
She will be meeting candidates and officials at various locations across the country including polling stations days before the country heads to the polls.
Counts will also be observed on election day, before her and the wider team produce a report on any successes and failures at a national press briefing.
Deputy Soulsby said observation missions have “an important role in enabling citizens to have confidence in the democratic process as well as to help make improvements for the future.
“The CPA provided an election observation mission for the Guernsey election in 2020 and recommendations provided in their report will result in changes for next year’s general election. I am honoured and excited to be able to play a part in such an important process."
Simon Ross, Guernsey’s States Greffier and branch secretary of the local CPA, said the role is highly reputable and would give the island a chance to participate in a major event.
