Guernsey Police are urging everyone to use extra common sense on the roads this winter after five road accidents occurred during the first two weeks of the year.
Two of those accidents have resulted in serious injuries for pedestrians, one of whom was transferred to Southampton Hospital for treatment.
In a post shared on social media aiming to reach as many people as possible, Bailiwick Law Enforcement said “keeping Guernsey’s roads safe is the responsibility of every road user.
"It is of course our responsibility to police them, but everyone that uses the roads must do so sensibly and with caution to keep the possibility of a crash low, and to keep every other road user safe.”
Guernsey Police's work on road safety extends beyond accidents, with a continual hard line against drink driving, and targeted campaigns to remind motorists not to risk it.
During the festive season, more than 250 motorists were stopped in the Christmas crackdown on drink driving, resulting in six drivers being arrested for driving while over the prescribed alcohol limit.
As 2024 ended and 2025 began, Bailiwick Law Enforcement continued their focus on road safety with the recent reminders about general road safety, with rules for everyone to follow.
The latest messages centre around the 'Fatal Five' which are the most dangerous decisions that motorists can make on the roads, they said.
Guernsey Police say drivers who commit one of the 'Fatal Five' offences are far more likely to cause a crash, and be involved in a fatal collision, than those who do not.
“Don't be selfish, and don't do any of these five things," they said. "It's that simple: the more we can reduce the number of accidents that occur in the Bailiwick, keeping our roads safer for all of us.”
