Don't listen to the 'Guernsey grapevine'!

Tuesday 31 March 2020

The daughter of one of the Bailiwick's first corona virus patients has issued an emotional plea for everyone to stop listening to the 'Guernsey grapevine' to prevent misinformed rumours being spread around the island.

Melanie Taylor cried as she recorded a message using Facebook live, which she wants to be seen by as many people as possible so that they know the truth about her mum's situation.

Mrs Taylor's mum tested positive for covid-19 earlier this month, after being admitted to hospital on Monday 23 March with respiratory problems.

She is said to be recovering well, but still struggles with her breathing sometimes. Mrs Taylor says other information which has been shared about her mother is incorrect though and she is very upset about some of the rumours going around.

Mrs Taylor has also been in self isolation since her mother was taken ill, as she had visited her at home before she was admitted to hospital as was a normal thing for them to do.

Since her mother's diagnosis, Mrs Taylor has not been able to visit her and has tearfully warned those watching her video that this could happen to any one of us, and that our loved ones might die alone if they contract this deadly virus.

"This is not a test. This is not a fire drill. This is the devil in disguise" - Melanie Taylor.

Mrs Taylor is concerned that some people are not sticking to the lockdown rules, imposed on the Bailiwick last week to try and curb the spread of the virus.

"It can affect us all, young, old, healthy, vulnerable. Please don't believe that it can't happen to you. You are not immortal. You are not so healthy that nothing can touch you. It bloody well can.

"Please trust in the powers that be, and those making decisions. You may not agree with them, but they can't please everybody. Our States, Gavin St Pier and Heidi Soulsby and all those people making those decisions. Dr Brink is exceptional - please trust them."

As well as raising awareness of the dangers of listening to rumours, Mrs Taylor wants to donate hand creams and other items to front line health and care staff so they can continue to look after their hands, while looking after others.

Mrs Taylor is an Arbonne sales representative and says £10 will buy a hand cream which will last two months.

She is also looking to donate 'fizz sticks' which are energy drinks, and 'hydration sticks'.
