Guernsey FC to help fans to get fit

Thursday 25 July 2019

A 12-week programme has been launched by Guernsey Football Club aimed at helping 35-65 year old men to lose weight, get fitter and improve their lifestyle.

Guernsey FC is preparing to deliver 'Football Fans in Training (FFIT)', a free initiative that is already being run by 100 English, Scottish and German football clubs.

In the first instance, GFC season ticket holders will be given priority to sign up and there will be space for 15-20 men.

“Guernsey FC is known for the affinity that exists between the club and its community of fans," said Nic Legg, Communications Director at Guernsey FC.

"When we were approached with this initiative, we were really keen to get involved so that we could give something back to all our fans. Our Chairperson Mark Le Tissier is the first to sign up and we would encourage other fans who would appreciate a bit of support to join the programme.”

The FFIT initiative was established in Scotland in 2010.

The initiative is supported by The Health Improvement Commission for Guernsey & Alderney.

Chief Executive Dr Simon Sebire said: “Local statistics estimate that more than half of men have a weight status that is overweight or obese, but men typically don’t engage in lifestyle or weight loss programmes. FFIT is different because the content and delivery style are designed to appeal to men, and it has been a great success elsewhere. The commission are delighted to join forces with GFC on this initiative and are grateful to the funding from the Guernsey Community Foundation.”

The group-based programme will be delivered by Guernsey FC coaches who, as well as passing on advice about how to get active and eat well, will give participants rare behind-the-scenes access to Guernsey FC.

It is free and open to men who are aged 35-65 with a trouser waist size of 38 inches or belly size of at least 40 inches and a BMI of at least 28. The programme will start in early September and will run for twelve weeks, with a weekly session combining education and activity.
