Guernsey cadet to feature in St John International campaign

Tuesday 08 March 2022

A St John cadet from Guernsey will feature in a social media campaign for International Women’s Day.

Mary-Anne Waterton is one of seven St John cadets from around the world, who were shortlisted for the digital campaign. It celebrates young people as the future of the organisation.

Miss Waterton joined St John as a 'badger', the junior branch of St John, before becoming a cadet.

“I feel very proud and honoured to be chosen as one of the seven girls for the celebration of International Women’s Day,” said Ms Waterton.

“I really enjoyed Badgers and now Cadets; I have learned lots of new skills which are useful in everyday situations and one day might help save a life.”

St John Ambulance Guernsey has a long history of giving young people foundations, opportunities and experience needed for a career in health and social care.

Chief Executive Office, Heather Langlois, said it was important to recognise younger members.

“As the campaign suggests, our cadets are the future of the organisation and, as an inclusive organisation, we want to encourage young women like Mary-Anne to develop personal skills, not just in terms of first-aid but also skills for life,” she said.

St John Cadets takes place on Tuesday and Friday evenings for 10 to 18-year-olds at the Ambulance Station.

Younger children can join St John Badgers from the age of five. 2022 will mark the 35th anniversary of the badger programme.

“Women are well represented across the whole of St John in Guernsey,” said Ms Langlois.

“There are a number of women in senior leadership roles and about half of the frontline emergency ambulance staff are women.”
