GSPCA rescues another seal

Saturday 22 December 2018

A third seal pup has been taken to the GSPCA for some medical care and recovery time, after being rescued from rocks at Vazon.

Gully was spotted by a dog walker yesterday, with the GSPCA's Ambulance Driver and Head of Marine Mammals, Geoff George, going out to collect him.

When he first arrived at the animal shelter he was found to have weepy eyes, along with a nose discharge, he was dehydrated and had a number of other injuries on his body and flippers.

Since then he has been treated at the Vetcare Centre where he was given medicine, before being taken to the GSPCA HQ where he is now being cared for at a brand new seal pen, which the charity recently built after a second seal pup was flown over from Jersey.

Marty is said to be eating well and is recovering well, alongside Andrew, who also was rescued in Jersey recently. He is improving but is yet to eat on his own.

Mr George said; “Gully has a number of injuries, weepy eyes, nose discharge, is quite dehydrated and not the weight he should be.

“We would rather see healthy seal pups doing well in the wild but Gully as we have called him has already seen the vet and is in our intensive seal care room.

“Like Marty and Andrew, Gully will need around the clock care at the GSPCA.

“This is the first time in many years we have had three seal pups at the same time and really shows the need for the Wildlife Hospital we are trying to build.”

Steve Byrne, GSPCA Manager, agreed the charity needs a Wildlife Hospital.

“Gully is now safe in our current Wildlife and Seal Unit but this third seal pup really shows the need of why we need to build a purpose built Wildlife Hospital. Many years ago we did reach 6 seals in our care which were all taken over to the UK.

“Before Marty the seal pup from Jersey arrived we made a third pen which was very lucky that we did as all three are now occupied.”

Mr George said they will collect any other seal pups spotted in the islands who need help though.

"If anyone spots a seal pup in Guernsey healthy or not we urge people not to approach them and to give us a call on 257261."
