GSPCA look to gauge opinions on fireworks, as unregistered display leads to death of 11 budgies.

The GSPCA says its observed a rise in private firework displays this year, and that they’re happening over a longer period than usual.

The charity has launched the 'Guernsey Firework Survey 2025' in response, to gather peoples' thoughts, experiences, and feelings on the current situation with fireworks in the island.

"We've faced challenges in helping animals cope with fireworks," said Steve Byrne, GSPCA Manager. "Even at the shelter, animals in our care become upset and distressed."

The GSPCA encourages people to attend organised firework displays and consider using silent fireworks or attending laser shows as alternatives to minimise stress and anxiety for animals and people.

"This year, we've been involved in and heard about several instances of lost and distressed animals, owners, and the public due to the increased number of events," said Mr Byrne.

"We're pleased to see there are now only two retailers who don't release fireworks until the days leading up to November 5th. Additionally, the States of Guernsey register and alert page for fireworks helps islanders stay informed about upcoming events and their locations."

Barbara Crowson knows first hand the impact fireworks can have on animals, after an unlisted display last week caused the death of 11 budgies under her care.

She said: “Simply, they have died of shock from fireworks that were not listed on Friday (1 November). I'm not saying bonfire night shouldn't happen but it should be simply November the 5th.

“These poor birds were my own bred ones, and super friendly. Now, the remaining ones are in shock. I put a radio and a light on for fireworks, but people setting them off without notification is not good.

“These budgies belong to a chap who has dementia and is in a care home. I care for them, and Snowy and Joey are the original first birds we got. It’s very sad in every way,” she said

With over 60 registered private firework events happening between now and 16 November, the GSPCA is eager to hear different opinions.

The charity is encouraging everyone to take a few minutes to complete the survey HERE.
