What does it take to be a States member? Find out tonight

Tuesday 16 April 2024

A final reminder that you can meet various deputies tonight at Beau Sejour and question them informally on the role of a local politician as election fever pitches up.

Several deputies including States Assembly & Constitution Committee President, Deputy Carl Meerveld will be in the foyer between 17:00 and 20:30.

Another event is being held on 20 April between 10:00 and 13:00 at St James café.

The Stateis hoping anyone interested in standing for election in 2025 will attend to ask any questions they have about government, individual challenges, and the process for putting your name forward.

“It is an extremely challenging role, but one that is essential to the success of our island, and one that can be very rewarding,” Deputy Meerveld said.

“It can also impact your professional and personal life in a number of ways, and it is better to begin that political journey with your eyes open, so you are as ready as possible when you ultimately put your name forward and ask the community to support you with their vote.”

He later told Express: "Those drop ins are not just for people who are interested in being candidates, but anybody who's interested in government and understanding the role of deputies is more than welcome to come along and have a chat."

Deputy Meerveld suggested anyone put off from standing after becoming more informed would be a good thing.

Deputy Steve Falla has indicated he will be attending both drop-in events, and Express will also be there tonight.
