Gill hosting tours of Guernsey to viewers around the world

Tour guides have had very few opportunities to tell visitors about our island in the past 12 months. However, one Gold Accredited Guide has embarked on a new initiative to do exactly that.

Gill Girard is now doing live virtual tours of Guernsey for hundreds of people, who log on from all over the world.

In conjunction with a new company called Virtual Trips, Gill has been conducting tours of the Lihou headland; telling everyone about Victor Hugo’s stay in Guernsey; Renoir’s paintings at Moulin Huet and the Occupation as featured in the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society Film.

More tours are planned, but first Gill has to ensure that she has a reliable phone signal, which is not guaranteed in certain locations.

“It has been wonderful once again being able to tell people all about our island and I have been overwhelmed with the friendly and positive responses that I have received, particularly from people in Canada and the USA," said Gill.

"I have no doubt that they will visit us in the future and I look forward to being able to show them around Guernsey in person."

The tours are conducted live, at a specified time and Gill has no idea who or how many people will log on until she starts her tour.

On the side of her mobile telephone screen, members of her virtual audience can ask questions during the tour and give comments on what they have heard and seen.

Gill says the reviews "have been most positive - very many people have now said that they would like to visit Guernsey, when restrictions allow."
