GEL bonuses a mystery and "completely discretionary"

Wednesday 22 June 2022

Guernsey Electricity has been unable to confirm or deny a claim that it awarded senior managers bonuses totalling seven-figures last year.

Claims on social media seemed to indicate that remuneration for the utilities’ senior figures exceeded £1million in 2021.

There was nothing in the utilities’ yearly accounts related to senior managers’ bonuses.

A Guernsey Electricity spokesperson said: “As in many commercial organisations, Guernsey Electricity sets its salary levels so that they include an element of performance related pay which is based on individual performance and that of the business.

“The details of the bonus scheme are confidential and is completely discretionary.”

Guernsey Electricity chose not to answer several questions submitted by Express, including whether the £1m figure was true, how remuneration was calculated, and the differences between remuneration in 2021 and previous years.

The electricity provider is raising tariffs for customers in nine days at a rate above inflation.
