Friday 12 November 2021

Guernsey has selected its first six athletes to compete in the island's Commonwealth Games team next year.

The Games will be held from 28 July to 8 August in Birmingham.

Cameron Chalmers, Alastair Chalmers, Joshua Lewis, Samuel Culverwell, Sebastian Tremlett and Marc Cox are the first Team Guernsey athletes to be announced.

Cameron Chalmers represented Great Britain at the Tokyo Olympics earlier this year. His brother, Alastair, will be hoping for a repeat of his gold medal victory at the 2017 Games in the Bahamas.

Professional cyclist Samuel Culverwell won silver in the Bahamas. In Birmingham, he will represent Guernsey in the time trial and road race.

Sebastian Tremlett and Marc Cox will be supporting Mr Culverwell in the road race.

Joshua Lewis is an accomplished triathlete and will be the sole representative for Guernsey in that event.

“There will be different challenges for all concerned at these Games and the Guernsey Commonwealth Games Association [GCGA] is following guidance provided by the...Organising Committee with regard to covid and residential proposals,” said David Harry, Chairman of the GCGA.

“Unlike at recent Games, where the teams have resided together in one Games Village, due to covid the new Village being built at Perry Barr is not going to be fully complete and therefore the athletes and officials are now to reside at Birmingham and Warwick University campus accommodation with management and medical officials support.

“Every Games come with new challenges and we will embrace the Birmingham 2022 Games with great enthusiasm and most importantly support our Guernsey athletes."

Mr Harry congratulated the athletes on their early selection.

He also said that he is looking forward to "welcoming local company sponsors - Specsavers, Cazenove Capital, Islands Energy Group and Ronez - in Birmingham next year where they will be able to view the events and athletes whom their four-year sponsorship has supported.”
