The Guernsey Bikers Group took to the streets yesterday and raised £630 in a ‘ride for resistance’ – a fundraising effort and act of solidarity with the people of Ukraine.

A good turnout of motorcyclists travelled north from Portelet beach around the island’s coast, culminating at North Beach car park late on Sunday morning.

Speaking to Express, event organiser Nemer Kharroubi claimed that this was the first biker event condemning war, “and hopefully the last".

Mr Kharroubi, who has helped to facilitate multiple charity rides over the years, said that “Guernsey is blessed with an amazing biking community, and we raise thousands of pounds yearly in charity".

Attendees donated cash in a collection bucket at the ride’s final destination and all proceeds went to the Bailiff’s disaster relief fund. A total of £630 was raised by bikers on the day.

Mr Kharroubi said that over the past few year’s bikers have “organised several events to raise awareness; a couple addressing mental health, HSC and frontline staff appreciation, and nurses’ pay rise support".

He claimed that public bodies are often “helpful and welcoming to our events,” and he also thanked the public for being patient whilst the bikers were on the roads.

Speaking of the people of Ukraine, he said on behalf of the group: “We admire their resilience and strength, our hopes and prayers are with them for this nightmare to end soon".
